June, 2009 Bottle Drive

Good day everyone included on this BCC email!
Great news, we have our final total for the bottle drive held in June.

$755.75

Thanks to those who came out to support the cause and those that dropped their empties off at the depot.

It is with this support that the club will now probably break even on the program and maybe even be able to purchase some building supplies to enhance the program. For those not aware, the program is run entirely by volunteers. Our expenses include the cost of leader training and the expenses associated with bringing the program instructor from Gibsons.

Thanks again for your support - this will help ensure that this program continues to progress!

Spring Pub Night Fundraiser

The PGCC held a spring pub night fundraiser to raise money for the club, to help us achieve the goals we are working on (Pidherny, community cycling) and to help ensure we are able to hold our 2009 events/races.

The pub night was held on Wednesday April 29 at 6:00 at the Thirsty Moose Pub up at UNBC. Thanks to the Thirsty Moose and it's staff for making it a wonderful night. Thanks to all our sponsors who donated in support of the event, and of course to the fundraising committee for their awesome job organizing this event!.

To check out some of the pictures, check out our picture album.

Community Cycling Forum

On March 25, 2009 the UCC hosted a Community Cycling Forum to identify what discourages cyclists and what Prince George should do to become cycle friendly. This forum had a great turnout and the group discussed many important issues as well as solutions. Some of the issues that were discussed included, poorly designed bike lanes, garbage and gravel in bike lanes, a lack of cyclist and motorist education, no bike parking/storage downtown, disconnected biking routs, barriers on biking routs, and many more important issues. The group also brainstormed many solutions including having "bike boxes" for turning on the street, bike corrals or lockers downtown, having physically separated bike lanes, and many more.

Road Race Rules

Holding Road races on public roads is a privilege. We must obtain approval each year from the City of Prince George and the Ministry of Transportation. We must abide by their rules or the privilege can be revoked at any time.

Riders must abide by the rules below or they will be barred from participating in the road race:

  • Provide proof of insurance (Cycling BC Membership or Race License).
  • Wear an approved cycling helmet.
  • Obey the rules of the road, including:
  • Do not cross the centerline of the road.
  • Stay to the right of the roadway in the bicycle lane or on the paved shoulder.
  • Do not pass motor vehicles on the left at the corners.
  • Pull to the right and stop for emergency vehicles.
  • Obey the directions of emergency services personnel.
  • Obey the directions of the marshals and officials:
  • Marshals will raise a red sign if there is a potential danger to riders due to motor vehicles, pedestrians or other cyclists.
  • Marshals will signal riders to slow or stop by showing them the palm of their hand if there is imminent danger
  • Marshals will wave riders through if there is no potential danger.
  • Be polite to motorists, pedestrians, cyclists, marshals, and officials even if you think that they are in the wrong.

Riders violating these rules will be disqualified for a first offence. A second offence will result in the rider being barred from events for the rest of the season.

In Addition for Time Trials
  • Do not draft other riders unless you are a team entry (e.g., two-up).
  • Report the names or numbers of riders breaking these rules to the timekeeper.
  • Do not cross the start/finish line going south after the time trial has begun (6:30 PM) unless you are racing. Warm up and cool down to the south of the start/finish.
  • Wear your number low down in the center of your back.
  • Do not block the bicycle lane or roadway in the start/finish area after you have finished your time trial.

Group Rides

Club lead - Intermediate/Advanced group rides will be starting April 29th.
These group rides will be held every Thursday that there are no Time Trials or Circuit Races scheduled. The ride starts from Cycle Logic at 6:30pm SHARP!!! The ride will be cancelled if it is snowing or raining.

If you are new to town and want to jump in to some other non-club lead group rides give Matt an email by clicking here.

Downhill Events

For Downhill race dates, please refer to the "Events Calendar" above.

As we work our way through the legalities of putting on an approved race we have discovered a few things that may disappoint some - sorry but beyond our control!
There were several requirements including the following:

1. Obtain a permit from Front Counter BC (ILMB) to hold a sporting event on Crown Land - complete
2. Sanction through Cycling BC thus allowing participants, organizers and volunteers to be insured during the event - complete

However, in doing so, we have discovered that there is a minimum age to participate in a downhill race, riders must be 15 years or older.  There are some exceptions that will allow 13 yr olds to race but we will not likely have that in place in time as we have to have the course pre-approved.

Course is being determined and will be announced during registration to try and give a fair advantage to all.

You will be responsible for your own shuttle during practice and race

Cost and other requirements:
Full Membership Required - that is:
you must be a PGCC member $20
you must be a Cycling BC Affiliated Member $30 (or have a citizen or UCI race licence) YOU MUST BE ABLE TO PROVE THIS WITH YOUR RECEIPT NUMBER AT REGISTRATION TIME!!!
you must pay race entry fee (to be determined but probably <$10/race)
you must sign a waiver - parents must sign if you are under 19

FULL FACE HELMETS ARE MANDITORY AS PER CYCLING BC - UCI AND INSURANCE REQUIREMENTS - NO EXCEPTIONS!!!

Keep an eye on the PGCC Web site for updates, check at the bike shops on the info post!!!

Looking forward to laying down some times!!!
